Crime Fiction: Main l Hank Janson

Crime Fiction

In June 2003 Telos introduced a new range of reprinted Classic Crime thrillers by Hank Janson. Controversial in their day, and as 'near to the knuckle' as the censors would allow, original examples of these books have become sought after collectors editions. The Telos range of reprints feature the highly sought after original cover artwork and in some cases, where this artwork was censored, the cover artwork as originally intended.

Telos is now expanding into other areas of Crime writing with reprints of the first three in Mike Ripley's acclaimed 'Angel' series of novels. Watch this space for more crime titles in the future.

Angel On The Inside

By Mike Ripley

Streetwise chancer Angel is in trouble – again. His partner Amy is being strangely secretive, and when the jailbird who's been stalking her turns out to be her secret ex-husband, he gets caught up in a hazardous escapade involving Welsh gangsters, female private eyes and ferocious cats.

Telos Publishing is proud to present the first ever paperback edition of the twelfth book in Mike Ripley's acclaimed series of comic crime novels - complete with a new, specially-written introduction by the author.

"The description of getting into Belmarsh Prison is so detailed that the author must surely have gone through this rigmarole himself ... Enough to make you laugh out loud ... An unfailingly funny crime series." Professor Bernard Knight (former Home Office Pathologist)

"Mike Ripley is Britain’s funniest crime writer. Angel On The Inside is both riotous and riotously funny." Peter Guttridge, The Observer

"Full of the good stuff, with a plot as meaty as prime steak and just as rich in protein ..." Philip Oakes, Literary Review

Just Another Angel Cover. (c) Telos 2006 - click for larger

Just Another Angel

By Mike Ripley

London in the late 1980s - the era of Thatcherism and Loadsamoney - is an exciting but sometimes dangerous place to live. Fitzroy Maclean Angel gets by partly through gigging as a jazz trumpet player, partly through taking illegal fares in his de-registered black taxi cab, and partly through ... well, just being in the right place at the right time. And, as he often says himself, it's better to be lucky than good.

In Just Another Angel, his debut escapade, the streetsmart Angel meets a beautiful and enigmatic blonde - and that's just the start of his troubles. Hotly pursued by a jail-bird gangster and his thuggish henchman, a maverick cop bent on revenge, and a dogged Inland Revenue inspector, he finds his life becoming more complicated by the minute. And just how an emerald pendant, a women's peace camp and a wad of French francs fit into the picture, he can hardly imagine ...

Back in print for the first time in a decade are the first three titles in Mike Ripley's acclaimed 'Angel' series of comic crime novels. Each title is handsomely packaged and contains an specially-written introduction by the author.

In Angel Touch, his second escapade, the streetsmart Angel comes to the aid of his neighbour, the sexy financial analyst Salome, and finds himself carrying out an undercover investigation into an insider trading scam amongst the coked-up whizzkids and mega-rich wheeler-dealers of the City. And things turn even nastier when a fatal car crash turns out to be anything but an accident ...

Angel Hunt

By Mike Ripley

London in the late 1980s - the era of Thatcherism and Loadsamoney - is an exciting but sometimes dangerous place to live. Fitzroy Maclean Angel gets by partly through gigging as a jazz trumpet player, partly through taking illegal fares in his de-registered black taxi cab, and partly through ... well, just being in the right place at the right time. And, as he often says himself, it's better to be lucky than good.

In Angel Hunt, his third ecapade, Angel has an old university friend drop in on him - quite literally, as he plummets to his death through a skylight window! And that's just the start of Angel's troubles, as he gets his arm twisted by the police to help with their enquiries into a group of animal rights activists, who might just have something rather more deadly on their minds than a bit of foxhunt sabotage ...

The Trials of Hank Janson Cover. (c) Telos 2003/04.

The Trials of Hank Janson

By Steve Holland

Respected researcher and pulp fiction historian Steve Holland gives,
for the first time, a comprehensive account of the early 1950s Home Office
crackdown on so called "obscene" paperbacks - of which
the Janson novels were the prime examples.

Holland also presents a full biography of Hank Janson – in reality, a man named Stephen D Frances – from his early life, through the highs and lows he experienced with the Janson novels, to his eventual decline and death in Spain, cut off from the character he had created.

Additionally the book details the full publishing history of the Janson stories, from 1946 right up to the present day with Telos’s reissue series.
