A supposedly harmless relic known as the Spirit Gate becomes active and whisks Jamie and Zoe into the future. The Doctor follows in the TARDIS and arrives in England, 1900, where the descendents of an English merchant from 1800 are gathering.

Among their number is a young man called Carnacki, an expert in all things mystical, and before long he is helping the Doctor investigate a series of bizarre murders in the house.

The spirits of the past have returned, and when the Doctor discovers that the house and surrounds have literally been taken out of space and time, he realises that their attacker may not be all they seem.

Background information:

Telos Publishing presents the fifth in our series of original Doctor Who Novellas, Foreign Devils, a story featuring the second Doctor and companions Jamie and Zoe, written by popular Doctor Who author Andrew Cartmel.

Andrew was script editor for the Sylvester McCoy era of Doctor Who on television and Foreign Devils is something of a departure for him as it features a team from long before his own time on the series - the second Doctor with Jamie and Zoe. The story sees them investigating a series of mysterious deaths at a secluded mansion house in Victorian England.

"Andrew suggested using, as a character in the novella, Carnacki, a psychic investigator created by writer William Hope Hodgson back in 1909, who featured in several short stories written by Hodgson, six of which were collected as Carnacki The Ghost Finder in 1913," explained Telos' David J Howe.

"We looked into the rights situation and found that all Hodgson’s work is now out of copyright, so without any difficulty in that regard Andrew was able to incorporate the character into the Doctor Who universe - and we think he’s done so to great effect."

To write the foreword to the book, David approached well known anthologist and literary historian Mike Ashley, who is also something of an authority on Hodgson's work, and his introductory piece sets the scene for the adventure that follows.

Providing the full colour frontispiece artwork for the deluxe edition is Mike Collins, who previously illustrated Cartmel's Doctor Who story The Good Soldier in Doctor Who Magazine 175-178.
